My first Heron spotting
I have lived in Nebraska for most of my life and had never seen a Great Blue Heron until I spotted this one along a creek bed in July of 2005. That spotting started me on a quest to photograph them up close. This is easier said than done but as you will see in subsequent images, I have had some success. This one however flew away before I could get any closer.
Great Blue Heron in flight.
He would let me get just so close and then he would up and fly away to the other side of the lake. It seemed like he was playing a game with me. I love the way his wing seems to touch the water on the right side. These birds can be majestic and graceful at times, but are often rather comical with there big feet and long skinny necks.
Heron in first year learning to fish
This guy spent the afternoon catching these tiny fish just to leave them lay around on top of the water while he caught more fish. I guess he was saving them for later. Given the fact that he is a young heron I think he was practicing his fishing skills. (The main give away that he is a young heron is the dark crown)
Pop eyed Heron-Sometimes awkward but mostly just beautiful and majestic!
This was taken in October of 2005. These would be the last I would take that year as they left the area for the winter season.
